Eyam Fell Race - Sponsored by The Barrel Inn The Eyam Fell Race offers runners an unforgettable experience on the rugged trails of Derbyshire's Peak District. Starting and finishing in historic Eyam, known as England’s plague village, this challenging course weaves through some of the most scenic moors and hills of the region. Participants begin with a steep climb out of Eyam towards Sir William Hill, passing by The Barrel Inn before continuing onto Abney Moor. Once there, runners are treated to panoramic views stretching across the Peak District landscape. However, no time is wasted admiring the scenery as they immediately turn right for an exhilarating descent down through Abney Moor and around a tight switchback. The route then ascends again through heather-covered moors before looping back towards Sir William Hill once more. After another steep wooded section, runners emerge back into Eyam where the race concludes in the village center. The course is designed to test endurance with varied terrain that includes climbs, descents, and technical sections over rocky paths. This event has gained a reputation for its welcoming atmosphere and strong community spirit. With strict limits on participant numbers, early registration is highly recommended to secure your spot. At the finish line, runners are greeted by a barbecue and bar in The Barrel Inn’s courtyard, providing a relaxing post-race environment with plenty of refreshments. The race welcomes individuals aged 17 and above (on the day) who have some experience with fell running or similar distances. For those under 18 years old as of the event date, previous participation is required to ensure safety on challenging terrain. In addition to the main race, a junior division offers an engaging introduction for young runners between ages 11 and 16 (inclusive). This shorter course covers approximately 3 kilometers and features its own set of challenges including steep ascents with steps. The goal here isn't just competition but also enjoyment and skill-building. Registration for the junior event is available on race day from 5:00 PM to 5:30 PM, costing £2 per entry. This includes prizes awarded based on age categories (U13, U15, U17) as well as a local first-place award. Proper footwear with excellent traction is advised for the junior participants. Overall, whether you're an experienced fell runner or looking to try something new, Eyam Fell Race promises a memorable day out in one of England’s most picturesque landscapes.
