Hartsop Hop

About the Event

The Hartsop Hop returns for its second year, promising runners an exhilarating yet challenging adventure through the rolling hills of England's Lake District. Spanning 19.5 kilometers (12.15 miles) with over 4,495 feet (1,370 meters) in elevation gain, this race is a true test for even the most seasoned orienteers.
The journey begins at sunrise from the sheep pens above Hartsop, where participants are immediately faced with their first decision: how to reach Rest Dodd, the initial checkpoint. The route choices here set the tone for what lies ahead, offering runners the opportunity to navigate through varied terrain and make strategic decisions early on.
Continuing northeast of Rampsgill Head, competitors must race against time as they approach the critical cut-off point at CP2, located in a saddle beneath High Raise. With only 70 minutes allowed from start to checkpoint, any missteps could lead to disqualification or forced retirement by marshals who guide runners back along the path north of The Knott and down towards Hayeswater.
After this initial push, the race continues with a steep descent toward Kidsty Howes, where tricky outcrops can disrupt progress. From there, it's an even steeper drop into Haweswater before a short climb up to CP3 at The Rigg. This section offers runners some respite as they traverse a rocky path above the lake.
The route then climbs towards Nan Bield Pass, presenting mostly runnable terrain that challenges participants' stamina and navigation skills alike. Lingmell End marks checkpoint four (CP4), where competitors must avoid getting stuck on the Kentmere Horseshoe, an area notorious for its unforgiving return journey against prevailing conditions.
As runners approach the final stretch, they are greeted by CP5 perched atop Gray Crag – a moment of triumph before facing one last descent. The direct line down is steep and treacherous, requiring careful footing to avoid injury or disqualification. Some may opt for a safer route around the outcrops at 500 meters elevation.
The race concludes back where it began, with runners making their way through the sheep pens to cross the finish line after an intense journey across some of England's most dramatic landscapes. The Hartsop Hop is not just about speed; it’s also a celebration of skillful navigation and resilience in breathtaking countryside.
This event invites those who love pushing boundaries both physically and mentally, offering a unique blend of orienteering prowess and endurance running through the scenic Lake District mountains.
