Lowther Lakeland Fell And Trail Race

About the Event

The Lowther Lakeland Fell & Trail Race returns for its 40th edition as one of the most anticipated events on the running calendar. Organized by dedicated volunteers, this race is not just about competition but also a significant contribution to charity; all proceeds after essential expenses go directly to Eden Valley Hospice.
This year marks an exciting change with reduced entry fees: participants will pay only £6 per person compared to the usual £16, making it more accessible for runners while still raising vital funds. To further support the hospice, organizers encourage each runner to make a donation of at least £10, allowing their contribution to be eligible for Gift Aid and thus adding an extra 25% in favor of Eden Valley Hospice.
The race begins promptly at Lowther Castle, located just south of Penrith near the A6. Registration opens at 9:00 AM with a start time of 11:00 AM sharp. The route spans a challenging but scenic 13 miles across Askham Fell and the picturesque Lowther Valley.
The course features approximately 1400 feet of ascent, weaving through diverse terrain including tarmac roads for about three miles before transitioning into open country with grassy tracks and rough pasture fields. Runners will encounter several notable landmarks such as Heughscar Hill and Knipe Scar, where they’ll navigate the first two SPORTident timing stations.
The route includes a memorable ford across the River Lowther, adding an element of adventure to the race while showcasing the natural beauty of Cumbria’s rolling hills and verdant landscapes. After traversing these varied terrains, runners will finish back at the historic grounds of Lowther Castle.
Trail shoes are recommended for this event due to the mix of terrain types; however, conditions on the day might allow faster runners to opt for trainers if they feel comfortable with it. All participants must carry a lightweight rain cover and full leg protection as part of their kit in case of wet or windy weather during the race.
Utilizing SPORTident Timing technology ensures accurate tracking throughout the course at both timing stations and the finish line, enhancing the competitive spirit while maintaining safety standards for all runners.
For those wishing to include their furry companions on this adventure, dogs are welcome but must remain leashed at all times. Runners should exercise caution when passing through fields with livestock to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Entries close two hours before race day begins, ensuring a smooth registration process without the need for last-minute sign-ups. Join us in celebrating 40 years of this beloved event while supporting an important cause that enriches lives within the community.
This year's Lowther Lakeland Fell & Trail Race promises to be as thrilling and rewarding as ever, combining athletic challenge with a meaningful contribution to charity. Don't miss out on being part of this special milestone in running history!
