The Heptonstall Fell Race is an exhilarating journey through the rugged beauty of the South Pennines. Set for January 9th, 2027, this BL category race offers runners a unique blend of challenging terrain and breathtaking views across the upper Calder Valley. Starting on the historic cobbled main street with a traditional blessing from the local vicar, participants will embark on a 25-kilometer route that winds through diverse landscapes. The course features steep-sided wooded valleys, expansive upland pastures, and vast stretches of pathless moorland where runners must navigate thick heather and dense woodland. As you progress along the trail, expect to encounter grassy slopes and boggy terrain, adding an extra layer of challenge to this already demanding race. Each step reveals panoramic vistas stretching across miles of untouched wilderness in one of England's most remote yet picturesque regions. Upon crossing the finish line, runners will be greeted with a warm welcome and hearty flapjacks before heading back to the village pub for an authentic Thai curry feast and prize giving ceremony. This community-driven event is organized by fell running enthusiasts who aim to support local groups such as Scouts, Guides, Church organizations, Mountain Rescue teams, CROWs (Calderdale Ridges Open Weekends), among others. All participants must adhere to Fell Runners Association rules, including carrying full waterproof body cover, a hat, gloves, map, compass, whistle, and emergency food. Entry is limited to those aged 18 or older as of the event date. Parking will be available at HX7 7EU for £1 per vehicle, with all proceeds going towards supporting local groups that make this event possible year after year. Join us in Heptonstall for an unforgettable race experience where every step taken contributes to a greater cause.
