Islay Marathon

Immerse yourself in the stunning beauty of Scotland’s Queen of the Hebrides at the Islay Marathon 2026, scheduled for September 12th. This picturesque marathon offers runners an unforgettable journey through some of Britain's most breathtaking coastal and rural landscapes.
The race begins at Bruichladdich on a crisp Saturday morning at 10:30 AM, taking you along scenic routes that wind past Bridgend, Bowmore, the low road, and finally into Port Ellen. The course then leads runners out to Arbeg via the Three Distilleries path before returning to finish back in Port Ellen.
Participants will encounter diverse terrain, including rolling hills and flat stretches by the coast, providing a unique blend of challenges and scenic delights. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot seals basking on rocky shores as they make their way through this idyllic setting.
The Islay Marathon is not only about running; it’s also an opportunity to support local charities and community groups in memory of Menzies MacAffer, a beloved runner and Royal Marine who inspired many with his dedication. All proceeds from the event will go towards these causes, making your participation even more meaningful.
Registration opens at 8 AM on race day for all participants aged over 18 years old. For relay teams, members must be 15 or older to join a four-person team and 17 to participate in a two-person team.
A strict six-hour cut-off time ensures the safety of runners; those who do not finish within this timeframe will receive transportation back to Port Ellen via sweeper car. Additional transport options are available from both Port Ellen (£10) and Bowmore (£7), ensuring easy access for all participants.
