Step into the world of Vikings and explore the ancient Danish landscape during the Jelling Viking Run, an extraordinary race that invites runners to trace the footsteps of medieval warriors. Set on September 26th at Monument Park in Jelling, this unique event offers a blend of history, adventure, and community spirit. The heart of the run lies within three distinct courses catering to various skill levels: The Family Mile (1.6 km), Kongeruten (4.3 km), and Krigerruten (8.0 km). Each route is designed with different terrains in mind, from flat paths suitable for strollers and wheelchairs along the palisade remains of Harald Bluetooth to more challenging trails through the ancient royal town. The Family Mile offers a gentle introduction around the park's perimeter, perfect for families looking to enjoy the scenic beauty together. Kongeruten takes runners on a journey through historic sites within Jelling’s old royal district, while Krigerruten challenges participants with longer distances and varied terrain that showcase the region’s natural splendor. Beyond these main races, there is an opportunity for orienteering enthusiasts to participate in Gorm's Viking Togt. This self-paced adventure allows runners to navigate Monument Park using provided maps and instructions at their own pace from noon onwards without needing prior experience or registration. Adding a touch of medieval flair, the Berserker Mile invites participants dressed as viking warriors to complete a lap around the monument grounds in full battle gear. Spectators are encouraged to cheer on these costumed runners along the way, creating an immersive and exciting atmosphere for all ages. After completing their runs, both athletes and spectators can unwind at Valhal’s After Party from noon until 2 PM with Viking-themed entertainment, food stalls, and activities that celebrate Jelling's rich cultural heritage. Free entry to Kongernes Jelling Museum is provided throughout the day, allowing participants to delve deeper into Denmark's historical roots. Registration fees are modest: adults pay DKK 120, children under 18 years old DKK 60, with an additional online handling fee of DKK 11. Participants receive a specially designed medal upon completion and can enjoy complimentary water and fruit at the finish line. The event kicks off early on September 26th when Monument Park opens its gates for registration from 8:30 AM to 9:45 AM, followed by a group warm-up session beginning at 10 AM. The races commence promptly thereafter with Krigerruten leading the way at 10:15 AM, Kongeruten following closely behind starting at 10:20 AM and wrapping up shortly after with the Family Mile at 10:25 AM. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest shield bearers across all categories during a ceremony at 11:15 AM. The Berserker Mile takes place at 11:30 AM, setting an energetic tone for Gorm's Viking Togt that runs from noon until 2 PM. Jelling Viking Run is organized by OK Gorm Orienteering Club and JFS Running Club in collaboration with Kongernes Jelling Museum. Participants are reminded to adhere to traffic regulations during the event and run at their own risk, ensuring they are fit enough for the chosen distance.
