Nestled within the historic grounds of Kirkstall Abbey, the annual race hosted by Kirkstall Harriers Running Club offers runners an engaging and scenic journey through one of Yorkshire's most picturesque landscapes. This 7-mile course is designed to challenge participants with a mix of terrain including riverside paths along the tranquil waters, stretches alongside the canal towpath, winding roads, and within the serene grounds of the abbey itself. The race route, while mostly flat, allows runners to experience the natural beauty and rich history surrounding Kirkstall Abbey. As you cross the finish line, every participant is rewarded with a complimentary bottle of beer, adding an extra layer of celebration to your achievement. This event not only provides athletes with an opportunity for personal accomplishment but also supports Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice in its mission to care for those facing life’s most challenging moments. The race is dedicated to the memory of Stephen Blades and Paul Reynard, honoring their legacies through this annual gathering of runners. The course layout makes it unsuitable for wheelchair participants due to its varied terrain, though all other runners are encouraged to participate without headphones to fully engage with the vibrant atmosphere and stunning surroundings. Since 2017, when the current route was established, impressive records have been set. James Saxton from Wakefield & District H & AC holds the men’s record at an astounding time of 37:56 in 2018, while Faye Birkby of Pudsey Pacers secured the women's title with a remarkable performance of 43:31 just last year. Join us for this unique and memorable event that combines physical challenge with meaningful support.
