Loch Ken Night Swim

Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Scotland’s night sky at the Loch Ken Night Swim, now entering its seventh year. This unique aquatic adventure takes place under the dark canopy of a new moon within Galloway Dark Sky Park, where light pollution is virtually nonexistent.
Participants have two distance options: 500 meters and 1 kilometer, with starting times set for 20:45 and 21:15 respectively. Swimmers are encouraged to arrive at least 45 minutes before their scheduled start time to ensure a smooth experience; this includes attending the mandatory safety briefing that begins 15 minutes prior to entry into the water.
Safety is paramount, with each swimmer required to wear an illuminated tow float for visibility and support provided by kayakers who maintain a low light profile. Kayaks are marked with glow sticks, ensuring they remain within earshot should assistance be needed. Additionally, two RIBs (rigid-hulled inflatable boats) will patrol the waters throughout the event.
The Loch Ken Night Swim is a small gathering of up to 30 swimmers per distance category, fostering an intimate and supportive atmosphere among participants. The Galloway Activity Centre, licensed by AALA and registered as an RYA training center, guarantees comprehensive safety measures with first aid services readily available on site.
Swimming in the clear waters of Loch Ken is a refreshing experience, especially given that SEPA tests confirm its quality. As part of a hydroelectric scheme, the loch receives regular infusions of fresh water from the Rhinns of Kells, maintaining an average temperature around 14 degrees Celsius (though it can drop to as low as 11°C). Wetsuits are mandatory and available for hire at £4.00.
After your swim, warm up with a hot drink and snack provided by organizers while collecting your finishers medal. The event also offers the opportunity to contribute to essential services like Galloway Mountain Rescue Team through optional donations or fundraising efforts facilitated by sponsorship forms upon request.
