Merrick Hill Race: A Challenging Ascent Through Scotland’s Galloway Forest Region Set for Sunday, September 13th, 2026, the Merrick Hill Race invites runners to conquer one of Scotland's most formidable peaks. This event takes place in the heart of the Galloway forest region, southwest of Scotland, where the terrain is as rugged and majestic as it gets. The race begins at Bruce’s Stone in Glentrool, accessible via the A714 road from Newton Stewart. Competitors will face an 8-mile route with a staggering elevation gain of 2,900 feet, culminating in the summit of Merrick – Scotland's highest mountain south of Ben Lomond. The journey up to the peak is nothing short of epic. Runners will ascend through the Fell of Eschoncan and continue on to Bennan Hill before tackling Benyellary. The final stretch leads them to the awe-inspiring summit of Merrick, where they'll enjoy breathtaking views over the surrounding landscape. After reaching this high point, participants make their way back down via the same route for a total distance of 8 miles. The race is organized by Girvan Harriers and sanctioned by Scottish Athletics (SAL) in collaboration with the Scottish Hill Runners. It adheres strictly to safety guidelines set forth by these organizations, emphasizing personal responsibility and preparedness. All runners are required to carry essential items such as a map, compass, whistle, and full body cover for their own protection. Online entries will be accepted until Thursday, September 10th, 2026. Those unable to register online can sign up on the day at Bruce’s Stone in Glentrool. For more information or inquiries about the race, contact Craig Murphy (Organiser) via cgmurphy23@hotmail.co.uk or Ann Rodger (Club Secretary), reachable by phone at 07851401623 and email ann.rodger65@outlook.com.
