About the Event

Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Scotland's Galloway hills at the annual Loch Ken Wild Swim. Now in its 15th year, this beloved aquatic festival welcomes swimmers of all levels with four distance options: a half-kilometer lap for beginners, a full kilometer loop to build confidence, and longer distances of two kilometers and four kilometers for those seeking more challenge.
The event takes place around a one-kilometer circular course in the pristine waters of Loch Ken. The lake’s crystal-clear water, regularly refreshed from the Rhinns of Kells hydroelectric scheme, ensures swimmers are treated to some of Scotland's cleanest swimming conditions. With temperatures typically hovering at about 14 degrees Celsius, wetsuits are mandatory for safety and comfort; they can be rented on-site for a nominal fee.
Safety is paramount at Loch Ken Wild Swim, with the Galloway Activity Centre providing comprehensive coverage through a mix of powered boats and paddlers in close proximity to swimmers. The event also benefits from support from the dedicated Galloway Mountain Rescue Team's Water Rescue Unit, ensuring that participants can enjoy the water without worry.
After your swim, warm up with a hot drink and snack provided as part of your entry fee, and proudly wear your finishers medal as you reflect on your achievement. Additional perks include an optional sponsorship opportunity to support local mountain rescue efforts and night swims offered on Friday evening for those who wish to experience the magic under moonlight.
Registration begins at 08:30 AM with swim starts scheduled throughout the morning leading up to a grand finale of the four-kilometer distance in the afternoon. Specific start times are available via your confirmation email, which will be sent out before the event date.
