About the Event

Wild Trails to Far Horizons: Pennine 39 Adventure
Experience one of the most breathtaking sections of the Pennine Way as you embark on Wild Trails to Far Horizons, covering an impressive 37 miles from Teesdale to Alston. This event is part of the renowned NAV4 series and offers a unique blend of challenging terrain and stunning scenery.
The route begins at Bowlees and takes runners through picturesque Mid-Teesdale riverside paths past Low Force and High Force waterfalls, iconic landmarks that set the stage for an unforgettable journey. The trail then leads to Cauldron's Snout, where you'll find a remote checkpoint with breathtaking views before continuing on to Crossfell, England’s highest point outside of the Lake District.
The route includes several notable checkpoints:
- Cauldron's Snout: A bridge over a waterfall and a remote walk-in for fresh water.
- Dufton Village Hall: An indoor checkpoint offering hot drinks, cold beverages, and snacks to fuel you up before tackling Crossfell.
- Greg’s Hut: This iconic landmark provides shelter from the elements with its friendly atmosphere, making it a welcome rest stop.
- Garrigill Village Hall: The final checkpoint offers refreshments as you approach the finish line.
The event is designed for runners and competent walkers who enjoy navigating wild trails. While navigation can be challenging in remote areas, GPS watches are allowed, and participants receive a GPX file to aid them along the way.
Event Logistics:
- Transport: A minibus will transport you from Alston YHA to Bowlees on Saturday morning for an early start at 8am or standard start at 9am.
- Accommodation: The event center is located at Alston Youth Hostel, which offers quality bunk room accommodation and kitchen facilities. Additional options include Garrigill Village Hall/Bunkhouse/Campsite.
Registration:
Participants can register on Friday from 6pm to 9pm or Saturday morning before the start time. Registration will also be available at Bowlees for those opting for an early arrival.
The event is open to all abilities, with finish times ranging between six and fourteen hours. The route features diverse terrain, including river paths, high moorland traversing Crossfell, and remote checkpoints that offer both challenges and rewards.
Join us in this unique adventure through the heart of England’s Pennine region, where stunning landscapes await at every turn.
