Spread Your Wings with NIMRA: A Scenic Journey Through the Western Mournes
Join us on August 29, 2026, for an unforgettable adventure through the breathtaking terrain of the Western Mournes. The race begins at Sandy Brae in Attical and takes you on a challenging yet rewarding journey that spans 11 kilometers with a total ascent of 768 meters.
The route starts off gently as runners follow a gravel path up to the Cattle Pens, where they will cross an ancient wall marking the beginning of their climb. The real adventure begins at Big Ol’ Boulder on Slievemageogh, your first control point and a significant elevation gain from the base. From here, you'll head north along Pigeon Ridge's broad trail toward its southern summit.
The route then offers runners the freedom to choose their path as they make their way to the Summit of Slievemoughanmore for another crucial checkpoint. This section provides an opportunity to explore different routes and enjoy the varied landscapes that surround this part of the Mournes.
After reaching Slievemoughanmore, a brisk descent awaits before you tackle the main event: climbing up Eagle Mountain. The summit here marks your fourth control point and offers spectacular views over the surrounding cliffs. From there, runners will navigate down along marked paths leading to the precipitous edge below before making their way back to Sandy Brae Car Park.
Throughout this challenging course, participants can look forward to a finish line celebration featuring refreshments like buns and biscuits at the car park where it all began.
