Rim Runner Trail Races

About the Event

Nestled within Franklin State Forest’s West Rim and West Side trails, the Rim Runner Trail Races offer runners an unforgettable journey along scenic overlooks that stretch miles above serene coves. The race is meticulously timed to allow participants to witness a breathtaking sunrise as they start their run on the eastern side of the course.
The name “Rim Runner” not only describes the route’s unique path alongside towering cliffs but also pays homage to Tennessee's rich history of rum running during Prohibition, adding an intriguing layer of local lore to the event. Surprisingly close to well-known trails like the Perimeter Trail, this lesser-known gem offers a stunning display of natural beauty and challenging terrain.
In 2027, the iconic 100-mile distance will not be officially held; however, those eager for one of the distinctive half-pound steel buckles can contact organizers for alternative options to earn their coveted reward.
The event is conveniently located within driving range from several major cities: Chattanooga (50 minutes), Nashville (1.5 hours southeast), Huntsville (1.5 hours northeast), Knoxville (2.5 hours west), and Birmingham (3 hours north).
Participants will face varying levels of elevation gain, with the half marathon course boasting 1,600 feet of climbing, while the more ambitious 50k route adds another 1,600 feet for a total ascent of 3,200 feet. The ultimate challenge is reserved for those tackling the full 50-mile distance, which includes an impressive elevation gain of 5,700 feet over its course.
Official finish times are set at 16 hours across all distances to ensure runners have ample time to complete their chosen route while experiencing the scenic beauty and challenging terrain. Refund policies range from a generous full refund or deferral four weeks before the event to a partial race credit within one week of the start date, offering flexibility for those who need it.
Awards at Rim Runner are as unique as they are prestigious: handcrafted steel buckles with intricate welding details await top finishers in each category. Additionally, runners completing half marathon and longer distances will receive custom sawed whiskey barrel staves, symbolizing their achievement through layers of craftsmanship reflective of the miles run. Each loop completed earns a distinctive mark on these personalized awards.
Rim Runner Trail Races promise an immersive experience that combines historical intrigue with breathtaking natural beauty, making it a must-attend event for trail runners and nature enthusiasts alike.
