Sardin Run invites trail runners to explore the rugged beauty of Italy's Trieste coast during August. Nestled along the Adriatic Sea, this 40-kilometer route winds through the Karst Plateau, an area rich with historical and geological significance.
The race begins by tracing the Rilke Path, a scenic route that inspired poet Rainer Maria Rilke as he composed his renowned Duino Elegies. As runners traverse sheer cliffs and pine forests filled with aromatic resin, they'll pass through bilingual villages where Italian and Slovenian blend seamlessly in everyday life. The terrain is varied, offering both steep ascents and descents into dense holm oak forests that create a natural barrier against the heat.
A significant highlight of Sardin Run includes crossing the trenches on Mount Ermada—a site from World War I where the Italian army faced formidable resistance. Alongside this historical path lies CAI Path 79, marking the border with Slovenia and offering insights into the strategic movements during wartime. Participants will also encounter the Mouths of the Timavo River, a natural wonder described by Virgil in his epic poem "The Aeneid."
Throughout the journey, runners experience the unique climate of Trieste's Karst region. The wild sage that thrives here contrasts with the cooling Bora winds that sweep across the ridges. White limestone paths wind through narrow gorges and open up to breathtaking views over the Adriatic.
