Saturn Running invites you to the 2026 edition of the GNR & Time Turner, an annual event that caters to both seasoned runners aiming for The Great North Run and casual joggers looking to enjoy the scenic beauty along the River Wear. Scheduled for Sunday, August 30th, starting at 9:30 AM from Durham Amateur Rowing Club on Green Lane in Old Elvet, this is a unique opportunity to run your own race. The event offers a flexible format with a seven-hour time challenge window, allowing participants complete control over the distance they wish to cover. The minimum requirement is just 3 kilometers for those looking for an easy jog or short loop around the course. For more ambitious runners, there’s room to aim higher—runners can tackle full laps of 4.37 miles (or approximately 7 kilometers) and accumulate as many as needed within the time limit. The exact distance per lap may vary slightly depending on conditions but is generally set at either a 3-kilometer or a 3.28-mile loop. The route itself winds along the picturesque River Wear, offering stunning views of Durham Cathedral amidst lush greenery and tranquil waters. Classified as a trail run with clear signage throughout, this course requires no navigational skills from participants. Whether you’re an experienced runner looking to push your limits or someone who prefers a leisurely pace, all abilities are welcome. Upon completing at least 3 kilometers, every participant receives a themed medal celebrating their achievement. For those reaching half-marathon distances (three laps), marathon distances (six laps), ultra-marathons (seven laps and beyond), or the ambitious 50-kilometer mark, special pins will be awarded to commemorate these milestones. In addition to the medals and pins, all finishers are greeted with a goody bag filled with treats. Vegan runners also have their own specially curated selection of goodies to enjoy post-run. To keep you fueled during your run, there’s an extensive aid station at both the start and finish line where a variety of drinks and snacks—ranging from crisp refreshments to sweet cookies—are available for everyone, including vegan options. For those marking significant milestones in their running journey, such as reaching 50 marathons or hitting round number achievements like your 100th marathon, Saturn Running offers personalized recognition with custom-numbered signs bearing your name and the event date. Facilities at Durham Amateur Rowing Club include toilets and changing areas for runners to use before and after their run. There’s also a secure area near the start/finish where you can leave personal belongings. Please note that while bags are provided, they aren’t staffed or monitored continuously; participants assume full responsibility. Parking is conveniently available nearby with free on-street options as well as pay-and-display spaces in the city center for those traveling by car. Detailed race day instructions will be sent out via email approximately one week before the event date. Race numbers can also be collected at registration prior to the start time of 9:30 AM. Headphones are permitted, and we ask all participants to remain mindful of other path users while enjoying this scenic run along public footpaths.
