Hilly Helmet X: A Night of Charity and Creativity On Wednesday, August 5th, the Hilly Helmet Challenge returns to Westbury’s Leighton Recreation Centre for its tenth anniversary. This evening race starts promptly at 7pm, offering runners a unique opportunity to support an important cause while enjoying a spirited event. For ten years now, this run has been dedicated to raising funds for Brain Tumour Support, a charity that relies solely on donations and volunteer efforts due to the lack of government funding. By participating in Hilly Helmet X, every runner contributes directly to helping those affected by brain tumours, as 100% of entry fees go straight to the charity. The race is known for its challenging yet rewarding course, covering a distance of four miles with some hills that provide both ascent and descent challenges. This year’s event promises an engaging experience enhanced by creative helmet designs from participants vying for the best helmet prize. Each runner will also receive one of Hilly Helmet's iconic pottery mementos to commemorate their participation. Safety is paramount, so runners are encouraged not to bring dogs along as some sections can be narrow and slippery depending on weather conditions. The event has won awards in 2019, 2022, and 2024 from Racecheck based on participant feedback, highlighting the community’s appreciation for this unique challenge. Leighton Recreation Centre will once again open its facilities to accommodate participants, while Westbury Cricket Club is expected to provide refreshments and a BBQ as they have in previous years. These amenities help create an inviting atmosphere that complements the competitive spirit of the race. Entry fees are set at £19 for general admission or £17 for members of ARC and England Athletics Affiliated clubs, with on-the-night entries costing slightly more at £21 and £23 respectively. The event is not suitable for wheelchair users due to its terrain but welcomes all runners who can complete the course in a helmet.
