The Cragg Challenge 2027

About the Event

The Cragg Challenge 2027 returns for its eighth year on June 27, promising another exhilarating day of cycling and running events along the iconic Cragg Road (B6138) near Mytholmroyd. The road will once again be closed to traffic, allowing participants to experience a thrilling mix of ascents and descents through picturesque landscapes.
Registration for all events takes place at Royd Ices on Cragg Road, adjacent to the start/finish line. While exact times are still provisional as plans finalize, this year’s lineup includes several challenging yet rewarding experiences tailored for various skill levels:
The centerpiece event is the Cragg 60K Sportive, a fully marked cycle sportive that winds through rolling hills and invigorating descents in Cragg Vale. This scenic route caters to both seasoned cyclists and those eager to push their limits, offering an exhilarating mix of climbs and descents. Cyclists can expect fresh air, camaraderie among fellow riders, and the chance to create lasting memories as they conquer this unforgettable course.
For runners, a variety of distances are on offer:
- The 10-mile run is a formidable challenge that involves ascending and descending England’s longest continuous climb, starting and finishing in Mytholmroyd.

- A 10K event caters to serious runners looking for a longer distance experience. Participants will ascend to a turning point before returning down the hill.
- The traditional 'fun run' is represented by a 5K route that starts from Mytholmroyd, ascending halfway up Cragg Road and then descending back to the finish line.

- A one-mile event, known as "The John Jones Memorial Mile," commemorates former chair John Jones. This race now features an ascent followed by a descent along Cragg Road.
In addition to these runs, cyclists can participate in:
- The Oliver Collinge Climb, a school relay named after the late teacher and resident of Cragg Vale who passed away from cancer in 2016.

- A Cycle Time-Trial where competitors race against the clock on an ascent course. This event offers participants the opportunity to focus solely on achieving their personal best times.
The day also features a Cycling Ascent, open to all cyclists looking to tackle this historic climb under full road closure conditions. An electronic digital clock at the summit ensures accurate timing for those seeking official records, although many may opt for Strava or similar apps for tracking their performance.
With limited spots available in each event and previous years' success serving as a testament to its popularity, early registration is highly recommended to secure your place on this memorable day. Join us for an invigorating celebration of cycling and running prowess amidst stunning scenery and vibrant community spirit.
For those interested in the Oliver Collinge Climb, please contact schoolscontact@craggchallenge.co.uk to register your school's participation.
