The Dragon Coastal Ultramarathons present three thrilling races along the Wales Coast Path, offering runners an unforgettable journey through some of Britain's most stunning coastal landscapes. Whether you're tackling the full 100-mile route or choosing one of the shorter options, each race promises a unique blend of breathtaking scenery and challenging terrain. The flagship event, the Dragon 100 Mile Race, kicks off on Saturday at 2:00 PM from Worms Head above Rhossili Bay. Runners will embark on an epic journey along the dramatic southern Gower coastline, passing by numerous bays and ruined castles that tell tales of ancient history. As night falls, runners reach Mumbles in Swansea, where they can enjoy a faster, less exposed section around Swansea Bay. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the route veers inland through Afan forest, marked with luminous running arrows to guide participants as they navigate dark and majestic trails. The next day, at Kenfig Sands Nature Reserve, runners will join up with those participating in the Dragon 50 Mile Race for a short loop before continuing along the Wales Coast Path. The Dragon 50 Mile route starts on Sunday morning from Kenfig Sands Nature Reserve and follows the coastal path back to Cardiff. This leg of the race features rugged trails and beach running through the nature reserve, offering runners stunning views and varied terrain. Both races then proceed past Porthcawl's bustling bays before tackling Merthyr Mawr, an expansive dune system that presents a significant challenge. From there, runners cross stepping stones at Ogmore Castle and continue along the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan Heritage Coast. The Dragon 30 Mile Race joins in Dunraven Bay (Southerndown) on Sunday morning, welcoming participants to this scenic stretch filled with historical landmarks like Nash Point Lighthouse and Atlantic College. As the race approaches Cardiff, runners pass through several points of interest including Llantwit Beach, Aberthaw Power Station, Porthkerry Park, Cold Knap Point, and Barry. The final leg sees the coast turning north at Sully Island, leading to a sprint finish along Penarth Pier before tackling the legendary Kymin Steps. The race concludes with runners crossing over Cardiff Bay Barrage towards the iconic Norwegian Church and Captain Scott Memorial, where touching the sign marks the end of this incredible journey. With approximately 3400 meters of ascent for the Dragon 100 Mile Race, 1300 meters for the Dragon 50 Mile Race, and 460 meters for the Dragon 30 Mile Race, these races offer a mix of runnable trails and challenging elevation gains. Participants can also opt to purchase XCover insurance at registration, providing peace of mind in case unforeseen circumstances prevent them from attending. The event promises an immersive experience that combines natural beauty with historical charm, making it a must-do for trail runners seeking adventure along the Welsh coast.
