The La Sportiva Lake District Mountain Trial is an unparalleled challenge for fellrunners seeking to push their mountaineering skills and endurance to the limit. This race, which has its roots dating back to 1952 when it was first organized by YHA, adheres strictly to orienteering principles, making it one of the longest-standing events of its kind in Great Britain. Participants must demonstrate a high level of experience to be eligible for entry. It's essential that entrants provide detailed information about their background and capabilities during registration, particularly if they are new to this event. The Classic Trial spans approximately 18 miles with an elevation gain of around 7500 feet (29 km/2300m), offering a challenging course estimated to take the winner roughly four-and-a-half hours. The Medium Trial covers about 13 miles and ascends some 5000 feet (21 km/1500m) with an expected winning time of three-and-a-half hours, while the Short Trial is slightly less demanding at around nine miles and a climb of 3500 feet (15 km/1100m), finishing in approximately three hours. This year's event includes a pairs option for runners competing together on the shorter course. The entry fee stands at £30, with a discount available to those who use their own SI card (£28.50). For competitors under 23 years of age on race day, there is a reduced fee of just £5 (with free loan of an SI card if needed). Included in the registration are hot food and map hire services, along with dibber rental for timing purposes. Interval starts will commence between 8:30 am and 10:15 am. Parking at the venue costs £5 per car, while overnight camping is available nearby at Seathwaite Farm Campsite. The race organizers reserve the right to retain all or part of entry fees in cases where the event must be curtailed or cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances beyond their control. This unique and rigorous competition offers a blend of breathtaking scenery and technical challenges, making it an unmissable experience for serious fellrunners looking to test themselves against some of Britain's most demanding terrain.
