The Night Thing 2026

The Auburn Riverside Retreat hosts The Night Thing 2026 on October 23rd, an enchanting evening race returning with its signature blend of natural beauty and trail running. Organized by Race Huron along the Maitland Trail, this event beckons runners to gather in early morning light before setting off at dawn under cool autumn skies.
Participants will traverse well-marked trails through a forest painted in vibrant fall colors—gold and orange hues creating a stunning backdrop. Two distances are offered: a 12K (approximately 7.46 miles), commencing at 7:00 pm, and the sold-out 7.21K (around 4.5 miles) starting ten minutes later.
The Auburn Riverside Retreat serves as both start and finish point, ensuring easy access for all participants. The course design offers an immersive trail experience with varying terrain—firm paths alongside softer sections—that highlight autumn's splendor in Ontario. A headlamp is recommended due to the race’s nighttime setting under a starlit sky.
Weather forecasts predict temperatures of about 13°C (55°F) and moderate UV levels, ensuring a comfortable run despite the night-time conditions. Runners are advised to prepare for cooler evening temperatures as the event progresses. Amenities at Auburn Riverside Retreat include all necessary facilities without additional aid stations along the course.

Entry fees are CA$65 for both distances, with limited t-shirts available after September 22nd. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your race start time to check in and claim your shirt.
Since its inception in 2014, The Night Thing has grown from a local tradition into an event that supports community scholarships while offering runners the chance to enjoy autumn's natural beauty amidst friendly competition.
