The Sussex Stride 2026

About the Event

Sussex Stride 2026: A Journey Through the Heart of the South Downs
Scheduled for August 22-23, 2026, The Sussex Stride is an epic endurance adventure through some of England's most breathtaking landscapes. This challenging event spans a total distance of 52 miles with over 7,000 feet of ascent, culminating in a grueling time limit of just 23 hours for completion.
Starting and finishing at the picturesque Plumpton College on Ditchling Road in Lewes (BN7 3AE), participants will traverse iconic villages like Offham, Glynde, Alfriston, and Falmer within the South Downs National Park. The route is dotted with seven strategically placed checkpoints offering essential sustenance throughout the journey.
Each checkpoint provides food and drink options, including vegetarian choices, ensuring that runners and walkers can refuel as they progress through this demanding course. A mid-event meal and a hearty breakfast at the finish line round out the nourishment provided by organizers to support participants in their quest for completion.
For those looking to secure entry into The Sussex Stride, it's important to note that all new entries are placed on a waiting list due to the event being fully booked. If you're selected from this list, you'll receive an email inviting you to officially enter and make your payment.
Upon arrival at Plumpton College, participants will find free parking available starting at 08:30 AM. Registration opens promptly at 09:00 AM for those who have been offered a spot in the event.
The staggered start times ensure that all runners and walkers can tackle this challenging course with their preferred pace:
- A first start at 10:00 AM exclusively for walkers, estimated to average no more than 3.5 miles per hour.
- The second wave begins at 10:30 AM for those who prefer a mix of walking and running or are faster walkers (averaging up to 4.5 mph).
- Finally, runners starting from 11:00 AM will aim for an average speed no greater than 6 miles per hour.
Participants must adhere strictly to the checkpoint times and visit all seven checkpoints in order as outlined in the detailed route description provided by organizers. This document is essential not only for navigation but also for ensuring compliance with LDWA Public Liability Insurance requirements.
Post-event, a certificate will be awarded to every finisher, available either printed or via email upon request. The event venue offers changing rooms and showers at the sports hall where participants can freshen up after their journey. Additionally, sleeping facilities are provided, making it possible for competitors to rest if needed before completing the final leg of their adventure.
The Sussex Stride is open exclusively to individuals aged 18 or older on race day. No membership with LDWA (Long Distance Walker's Association) is required to participate in this event, but all entrants must adhere strictly to safety guidelines and rules outlined by organizers. These include carrying a mug for hot drinks and a torch/flashlight throughout the night portions of the course.
With its blend of scenic beauty, challenging terrain, and supportive community atmosphere, The Sussex Stride promises an unforgettable experience for endurance enthusiasts seeking both personal achievement and camaraderie among fellow adventurers.
