The Thornthwaite Round

About the Event

The Thornthwaite Round returns, offering runners the opportunity to support the restoration of historic Thornthwaite Church while navigating through some of Cumbria's most stunning landscapes. This challenging 15.6km trek features an elevation gain of 870 meters across a mix of forest tracks and open fell terrain.
Participants will encounter checkpoints at Lord’s Seat, Broom Fell, Brown How, Whinlatter, and Seat How, each providing unique views and moments to appreciate the natural beauty surrounding them. The route is clearly marked with flags throughout the forest sections, ensuring that runners stay on track amidst other trail users.
The race begins promptly at 11:00am, allowing competitors ample time to enjoy a scenic start before tackling the varied terrain ahead. Entry includes refreshments such as tea and homemade cake upon completion of the course.
Those interested in joining can register for £15 if they sign up on the day; however, early entry is recommended due to limited parking facilities at the event site. To reduce traffic congestion, organizers encourage carpooling or using public transportation options like the X5 bus from Cockermouth or Keswick, which stops just 200 meters away from the start line.
The Thornthwaite Round has seen impressive performances in recent years, with Sam Holding setting a men's course record of 1:14:49 and Celia Powell achieving an equally remarkable women’s time of 1:30:53. Join this iconic race to challenge yourself while contributing to the preservation of Thornthwaite Church.
The event promises not only personal achievement but also a chance to connect with nature and give back to the community through your participation.
