WRE John Bennison Long O

About the Event

Held annually on the expansive Long Mynd, an open moorland landscape with diverse terrain and stunning views, the "Long O" race is both challenging and rewarding for runners of all levels. Named to honor John Bennison’s legacy, this event offers a unique blend of natural beauty and technical running challenges.
The starting point is conveniently located near the Gliding Station on top of the Long Mynd, accessible via Sandford Avenue off the A49 heading west from Church Stretton. Participants should park along the roadside close to Pole Cottage before reaching the glider entrance. For those relying on public transport, Transport for Wales offers services connecting Shrewsbury and Hereford with Ludlow.
Race organizers provide detailed 1:15000 maps by Pete Jones and Tim Kieniewicz, featuring updated contour lines every five meters, to help navigate through an ever-changing landscape of grass, heather, bracken, and gorse. The terrain is marked by steep slopes dotted with scattered crags and occasional scree fields.
Four courses cater to various skill levels: Very Short (3.4km), Short (5.6km), Medium (8.3km), and Long (13.7km). Each course features a significant elevation gain, ranging from 55 meters for the shortest route up to 850 meters on the longest one.
Electronic punching will be used throughout all courses with Sportident dibbers available for hire (£1) or purchase if lost (£40). Runners are advised to wear waterproof clothing in wet conditions and carry a whistle, mobile phone, and hydration supplies. The terrain is known for its slippery slopes and potential encounters with livestock; therefore, runners should be prepared accordingly.
The race environment emphasizes safety and respect for the natural setting. Competitors must adhere to rules regarding public interaction, traffic management on minor roads, and environmental preservation. With limited facilities available along the route, participants are encouraged to carry all necessary items such as food, water, and emergency supplies.
This event offers more than just a physical challenge; it immerses runners in the rich history of John Bennison while showcasing the breathtaking scenery and varied terrain of the Long Mynd. Whether you're an experienced runner or new to orienteering, the "Long O" promises an unforgettable experience on this historic course.
For further details about planning your journey or other inquiries regarding race day logistics, please refer to the event planner Tim Kieniewicz and controller Andrew Weaver for assistance.
