2026 Islendingadagurinn-Icelandic Festival of Manitoba Running Races
About the Event
The 8th Annual Islendingadagurinn-Icelandic Festival of Manitoba Running Races returns to Gimli, Manitoba on August 2nd, 2026. This event is a beloved tradition in the community, offering runners of all levels the chance to participate in three distances: a 5K race, a 1 Mile fun run, and an iconic 10 Mile road race. The festival's roots stretch back eight years, making it one of Manitoba’s premier summer running events. The picturesque setting of Gimli Pavillion Park, located on the eastern side at the intersection of Amisk and Fifth Avenue, serves as both the starting point and finish line for this year's races. On a crisp August morning, runners will be greeted by the fresh scent of wildflowers and the distant sound of music from nearby festivities celebrating Icelandic heritage. The race course winds through Gimli Beach before turning inland to Winnipeg Beach, providing a mix of scenic views and flat terrain ideal for competitive racing. This 10 Mile road race is part of the Interlake Run Series, which challenges participants with four races around Manitoba’s beautiful lake area between Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba. The route has remained largely unchanged for over five decades, offering runners an opportunity to experience the steadfast reliability of a classic course while competing in one of Western Canada's oldest running events. The 35th Annual Jan's Memorial 1 Mile Fun Run is set to start at Gimli Pavillion Park just before the more significant races. This event is designed for all ages and abilities, making it accessible for both seasoned runners and newcomers alike. Registration can be done on race day from 7:55 AM to 8:25 AM. The weather forecast predicts an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius with a slight chance of rain, though the feel like is expected to mirror this comfortably warm setting. Runners should anticipate mild humidity and gentle winds that will add some character to their run but not detract from performance.
