Admiral McHilly Trail / Chelmer Trail

Essex Trail Events presents two distinct trail races, each offering a unique challenge and setting for runners on Sunday, August 23rd, 2026.
The Admiral McHilly Trail is an approximately 16-mile route that traverses the scenic Danbury Hill area. This year's course features an additional 200 feet of elevation gain to its already challenging middle third, which includes a total climb and descent of about 700 feet. Participants can expect steep climbs followed by descents through varied terrain, making it ideal for those who enjoy hilly trails with significant elevation changes.
The Chelmer Trail offers a more relaxed experience at approximately six miles long, winding through the flat landscape of the Chelmer Valley. This route is perfect for runners looking to explore a less strenuous trail while still enjoying beautiful scenery and open spaces.
Both races are self-navigated events using written route descriptions provided on race day; there will be no markings or marshals along the way, so participants should come prepared with their own navigation tools if needed. The event does not provide GPS files for download in advance but ensures that all runners will have a detailed map and instructions to guide them.
Race HQ is situated outside Springfield Cricket Club at Coronation Park on Timsons Lane, Chelmsford CM2 6AF. Parking is available nearby with ample space for participants and spectators alike.
Entry fees are £8 for affiliated members and £10 for unaffiliated runners, plus a booking fee of 50p per person. Each entry includes a £3 voucher to be used at the Cricket Club bar on race day. As part of UK Athletics guidelines, running or walking with dogs is strictly prohibited during the event.
To ensure safety and compliance, all participants must provide emergency contact information and confirm that they agree to adhere to the terms and conditions set forth by Essex Trail Events. For those entering multiple times for friends or family members, full details including mobile numbers and email addresses are required before the closing date of August 16th; otherwise, entries will not be accepted.
No refunds will be given under any circumstances except in case of race cancellation due to unforeseen events such as severe weather conditions. Transfers between participants are also prohibited after this same deadline.
Choose your start time from a list provided upon registration and arrive early on the day for an enjoyable run through Essex’s picturesque countryside.
Participants should note that while drink stations will be available, it is recommended they carry their own hydration supplies due to the hilly nature of the longer course. The atmosphere at both events promises camaraderie among runners as everyone navigates the trails together in a spirit of mutual support and adventure.
