On Sunday, July 26th, 2026, MID ESSEX CASUALS invites runners and walkers to participate in its 16th annual Scouting for Boys and Girls self-navigation trail. This unique event offers three distinct distances: a challenging 13-mile route, a more manageable 7-mile option, and a family-friendly 4-mile course. The race begins at 9:30 AM from the Scout Hut located on Church Road in Hatfield Peverel (CM3 2LD).
Participants will navigate through scenic countryside without any marshals or route markings, relying solely on their map-reading skills to find their way along footpaths and field edges. While some short road sections are included, spikes aren't necessary for this off-road adventure. A narrative guide is provided to each entrant to assist with navigation.
The event adheres strictly to UK Athletics rules under TRA Permit 8367. Registration opens at the Scout Hut from 9:30 AM, where runners can access toilets and begin their staggered starts. Entry fees are £9 for affiliated participants and £11 for unaffiliated entrants; no refunds will be issued.
Upon completing your journey, you'll find a self-service drink station approximately halfway through the longer routes to help keep you hydrated during this demanding course. The finish line at the Scout Hut offers first aid and defibrillators in case of any emergencies. Additionally, all participants are treated to a complimentary ploughman's lunch and refreshments after crossing the finish.
This event is open to runners aged 17 years or older; younger scouts must be accompanied by an adult participant. Dogs are not permitted on this trail due to safety concerns for both humans and animals alike.
