Nestled along Scotland's picturesque coast, the Brodick Trail Challenge offers an exhilarating journey through rugged terrain and serene landscapes. The race begins at Ormidale Sports Field in Brodick, where participants will embark on a 10K route that winds its way up to the rolling hills between Brodick and Lamlash. The course starts with a gentle ascent from the sports field into West Mayish estate, following a short stretch of tarmac before transitioning onto a rough footpath. Runners then climb steeply through fields until they reach the top of a hill overlooking the sea. From here, competitors turn right to follow a broad forestry road for half a mile, descending gradually into Glen Cloy. Crossing the Cloy Burn via an old Forestry bridge, runners continue down a narrow footpath and navigate two rough fields before following the track beside the burn past Auchrannie Resort. The race concludes at the historic garage forecourt situated near the bottom of Auchrannie Road, offering stunning views as you cross the finish line. Given that only 250 yards of this challenging route is on paved surfaces, trail runners are advised to wear sturdy shoes with excellent grip and traction for optimal performance over uneven terrain. The total elevation gain comes in at approximately 600 feet above sea level, providing a rigorous yet rewarding experience for all participants. Post-race refueling options abound in Brodick, catering to various tastes and budgets, ensuring runners can enjoy hearty meals after their efforts. For day trippers looking to participate, the ferry from Ardrossan offers convenient connections with departures at 09:45 AM or 12:30 PM, allowing ample time for a scenic walk to the Ormidale Sports Pavilion where both registration and race start take place. Competitors can make use of toilet facilities and changing rooms within the sports pavilion before setting off on their adventure. Parking is available at the nearby Ormidale Sports Ground car park. This event has seen impressive performances in recent years, with Craig Ferguson holding the men's record at 34 minutes and 52 seconds, while Jennifer Wetton stands as the women’s top finisher with a time of 38 minutes and 49 seconds. The race is open to runners aged 16 or older, accommodating up to 100 participants. The Brodick Trail Challenge invites you to explore Scotland's natural beauty through an unforgettable running experience that combines scenic vistas with challenging terrain.
