The Cairnsmore Hill Race, nestled in the heart of southern Galloway, offers runners an exhilarating journey through rugged terrain and breathtaking landscapes. This challenging race spans 17.50km with an impressive ascent of 800 meters, making it a true test for experienced fell runners. Registration opens at Muirfad Farm in Palnure from 9:30 am on the day of the event, leading up to the start time of 11 am. Participants will embark on a route that takes them over Knocktim and through the steep Door of Cairnsmore before reaching the summit of Cairnsmore of Fleet at its trig point. From there, runners follow the Knee of Cairnsmore northward before turning southwest to descend all the way back down to the finish line. Along this course, competitors will encounter three critical checkpoints: Bottom of Door of Cairnsmore (NX 520 646), Knee of Cairnsmore (NX 189 653), and the summit at Cairnsmore of Fleet Trig (NX 501 670). This race is designed for runners aged 18 years or older who have a solid background in fell running and navigation skills. Given its winter timing, participants must be prepared to face challenging conditions that may include heavy snowfall, icy terrain, and strong winds. Galloway Mountain Rescue Team will provide essential support throughout the course by manning checkpoints, offering first aid services, and serving hot soup and refreshments at the finish line. All proceeds from this event go directly towards supporting Galloway MRT’s vital work in mountain rescue operations. Entries are available online or on-site for £20 per person. The race is sanctioned under Scottish Hill Runners (SHR) rules, ensuring a fair and competitive environment for all participants. For more detailed information about the route and mandatory kit requirements—such as appropriate footwear, clothing, hydration systems, navigation tools, emergency shelter, and safety equipment—please visit www.BrucesCrown.co.uk.
