Dartmoor 100: The Full Circle In its fourth year, the Dartmoor 100 stands as an unparalleled endurance challenge that takes runners on a complete circumnavigation of Dartmoor. This unique race is not only the first to traverse every inch of this historic moorland but also offers competitors some of England’s most rugged and scenic terrain. The route follows the well-marked Dartmoor Way, weaving through both northern and southern sections of the Moor. It encompasses ancient tracks and trails that wind through lush woodlands, along serene riversides, and across quiet country lanes. Runners will encounter a mix of familiar landmarks and secluded villages as they navigate this challenging course. The race is an unbroken 34-hour event during which participants must visit six indoor checkpoints to ensure their safety and completion. These checkpoints are conveniently located in village halls or church buildings where runners can rest, refuel on hot food and drinks, and receive encouragement from the dedicated OuterEdge team and local running clubs manning aid stations. The terrain presents a formidable challenge with over 4000 meters of ascent across rocky paths, tussocky grasslands, and boggy moors. The autumn setting adds an element of unpredictability to the race as cold temperatures, rain, and possible snow can test even the most seasoned runners. A significant portion of the route is run under moonlight or by headlamp, adding another layer of difficulty. Starting at noon on Friday, October 2nd from Okehampton’s OCRA Pavilion in Mill Road (EX20 1GE), the Dartmoor 100 requires participants to be physically fit and experienced with ultra-distance running. Competitors must also demonstrate their ability to navigate using pre-marked maps or GPS devices. Throughout the race, runners are monitored via GPS trackers for safety reasons while allowing friends and family to track progress online. Upon crossing the finish line in Okehampton around 24-30 hours later, participants receive a bespoke medal along with trophies for first, second, and third place male and female categories plus age category awards. The event offers comprehensive support from start to finish including medical assistance provided by doctors and paramedics stationed at various points on the route. Runners also have access to changing and shower facilities throughout the weekend as well as bar services and hot food options available continuously.
