Dartmoor Granite 50: A Challenging Journey Through Moorland Majesty The Dartmoor Granite 50, now entering its fifth year, is an arduous yet rewarding adventure through the rugged beauty of Dartmoor National Park. Set to run simultaneously with the Dartmoor Full Circle 100 event, this race covers a distance slightly over two marathons at 51 miles. The route begins in Scorriton and winds its way eastward across open moorland, passing through picturesque villages such as Ashburton, Haytor, Manaton, Chagford, before reaching the finish line in Okehampton. This event is not for the faint-hearted; it demands a high level of fitness and endurance. The terrain includes rugged sections that test both physical strength and mental fortitude. With over 2000 meters of ascent, participants will face steep climbs and descents throughout their journey. Night navigation skills are crucial as competitors navigate through challenging conditions during the final hours. To participate in the Dartmoor Granite 50, runners must have completed at least one trail marathon between October 1st, 2024, and August 31st, 2026. This ensures that all participants bring a solid foundation of experience to tackle this demanding course. The race begins promptly at 7:00 am from Scorriton, near Buckfastleigh (TQ11 0JB), with competitors having up to 15 hours to complete the distance. The event offers comprehensive support along the way, including three full checkpoints where hot food and drinks are available to refuel runners. Additionally, GPS trackers provide real-time tracking for both the Granite 50 and Full Circle 100 participants, ensuring safety and peace of mind throughout the race. A GPX file is also provided for those who prefer electronic route guidance. Upon crossing the finish line at the OCRA Pavilion in Okehampton (Mill Road, EX20 1GE), runners will be greeted with bespoke trophies for the top three male and female competitors. The event center features changing and shower facilities as well as a bar offering hot meals throughout the weekend. Free parking is available to all participants. For those needing an early start, bus transfers leave Okehampton at 5:00 am to drop runners off in Scorriton by 6:00 am for final preparations before the race begins. The Dartmoor Granite 50 offers not only a test of physical prowess but also an immersive experience through one of England's most captivating landscapes. With professional medical support from Peninsula Medical and full OuterEdge event crew backing, this challenging yet rewarding journey is perfect for trail runners seeking to push their limits in the heart of Dartmoor.
