Nestled amidst Yorkshire’s breathtaking landscapes, The Heights Ultra Trail Festival (HUTFEST26) offers trail runners an unparalleled experience through the rolling moors and serene reservoirs of Huddersfield's Colne Valley. Now entering its sixth year, this event has become a cornerstone for both seasoned ultrarunners and newcomers alike, drawing participants from across the UK to explore West Yorkshire’s lesser-known but stunningly beautiful trails.
HUTFEST26 is more than just an athletic challenge; it’s a community-driven festival that celebrates trail running while supporting local rural primary schools through fundraising efforts. The event features two ultra distances—a 50-mile and a 50km race—alongside shorter challenges of 27km and 10km, ensuring there's something for every runner.
Upon arrival at Broad Oak Cricket Club on Saturday, September 19th, 2026, participants will find themselves immersed in a welcoming atmosphere brimming with family-friendly activities. The event village offers food stalls, post-race celebrations, and plenty of space to socialize before the race begins. Volunteers from the local community work tirelessly to ensure that every runner feels supported throughout their journey.
The route itself is a true test of endurance and resilience, weaving through rugged moorland terrain dotted with reservoirs and Pennine trails. Each distance offers unique challenges, marked by wayfinding signs, arrows, and flags to guide runners along the course. Ultra participants will also receive waterproof maps for navigation assistance during their journey.
Mandatory kit requirements include essential items such as a waterproof jacket, trousers, long sleeve top, hat, gloves, water container, compass with whistle, torch (for 50-mile only), bivy bag, mobile phone for emergencies, and money. These provisions ensure the safety of all runners while adhering to UKA rules under TRA licensing.
Throughout the event, feed stations are strategically placed at key checkpoints like Holme Village, Wessenden Head, and Clough Head, providing hot meals, sandwiches, fruit, cakes, snacks, energy options, and both cold and hot drinks. This sustenance is crucial for runners to maintain their strength over long distances.
HUTFEST26 places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability and respect for the land, encouraging participants to carry out all waste and behave responsibly towards local communities and wildlife habitats.
Upon crossing the finish line, expect professional race photographers capturing memorable moments that can be purchased later through an online gallery. The event concludes with post-race celebrations where runners share stories of their journey over hearty meals and drinks in a festive atmosphere.
