Lundy Island Half Marathon: A Unique Trail Running Experience In July 2027, trail runners will converge on Lundy Island for the first non-Raceboat entry of this extraordinary half marathon. While Raceboat entries provide a convenient ferry service to and from Ilfracombe harbor, participants opting for the non-Raceboat option must arrange their own transportation to reach the island. Conceived by Outeredge Race Director Mark Brooks in 2018, the Lundy Island Half Marathon has grown immensely over the years. The race received national attention when BBC Radio 4's Open Country featured it on air, highlighting its unique appeal and challenging course layout. The event is renowned for offering a pristine running experience across nearly 13.5 miles of trails meticulously maintained by the Landmark Trust. Runners will explore every corner of this rugged island in the Bristol Channel, encountering technical coastal paths along the eastern side and undulating clifftops to the west. The course winds through steep slopes before reaching the central spine of Lundy. With a 3.75-hour time limit, participants must be prepared for both physical and mental challenges as they navigate this diverse terrain. Two aid stations are strategically placed at North Lighthouse and Castle Hill, ensuring runners have access to essential supplies throughout their journey. Upon arrival on Lundy Island via the MS Oldenburg ferry (for Raceboat entries), competitors will walk approximately 15 minutes from the harbor to race headquarters in the village for registration and number collection. The Marisco Tavern serves as both the start/finish line, creating a cozy atmosphere before and after the event. Every finisher receives a commemorative Lundy Puffin medal, celebrating their achievement on this remarkable island setting. Race organizers ensure safety with fully marked routes, marshals stationed along the course, and medical support readily available at aid stations and race HQ. The MS Oldenburg departs Ilfracombe harbor early in the morning to transport runners to Lundy Island by 11 am for a noon start time on July 18th. The ferry returns participants back to civilization around dusk after ample post-race relaxation opportunities are provided. Participants should be aware that dogs and unregistered foot passengers are not permitted on Lundy, ensuring an environment focused solely on the race experience. Mandatory kit requirements include items necessary for safety and endurance in this remote location. This event is open only to those aged 17 or older under Trail Running Association (TRA) guidelines. Non-Raceboat entrants must manage their own travel arrangements while adhering to strict name change policies before June 6th, 2027.
