Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Peak District, the Salt Cellar Fell Race promises an exhilarating challenge for fell runners. Scheduled for Friday, August 7th at 7pm from Fairholmes Visitor Centre, this race covers a distance of 10.9 kilometers with nearly half a kilometer (486 meters) in ascent, making it a Category BM event. Organized by Steel City Striders and sanctioned by the Fell Runners Association (FRA), participants will start and finish under the dam wall at Upper Derwent Reservoir. Registration takes place at Fairholmes Car Park, located on Ladybower Reservoir's northernmost point. The route winds up onto Derwent Edge before descending from Salt Cellar Boulder, offering runners breathtaking views and diverse terrain. Despite favorable weather conditions in recent years, competitors are advised to carry full FRA kit as per section 3 of the runner’s rules, just in case adverse weather strikes during this challenging course. Marshals will be stationed at key points along the route, with turns clearly marked even where marshals aren’t present. Post-race refreshments will be provided for all participants and are included in the entry fee. Parking is available at Fairholmes Car Park (fees may apply) or along roadside lay-bys leading to the car park. Proceeds from this event after covering expenses will benefit EDALE MOUNTAIN RESCUE, a registered charity that provides emergency support for runners during races. Additionally, funds will also go towards The National Trust, another esteemed charitable organization dedicated to preserving natural landscapes and heritage sites. For more information about race details or entry requirements, visit the Steel City Striders website at www.steelcitystriders.co.uk/salt-cellar-fell-race/. Entries are limited to 250 runners this year.
