The Shetland Sprint Triathlon 2026 invites athletes to explore the rugged beauty of Scotland’s northernmost isles, with this year's race taking place at West Mainland Leisure Centre. The triathlon promises an exhilarating blend of pool swimming and scenic cycling routes before concluding with a challenging run through Aith. The swim segment will kick off in the leisure centre’s 16-meter pool, where participants complete a half-kilometer lap amidst the facility's modern amenities. After exiting the water, athletes transition to their bikes for an invigorating cycle ride that ventures out from Aith towards Bixter Junction and then along the coastal road leading toward Papa Stour Ferry. The cycling route features varied terrain with picturesque views of Shetland’s landscape, including rolling hills and open stretches by the sea. Cyclists will enjoy a loop back to Aith before transitioning once again for the run segment. The 5km run consists of six laps around the leisure centre grounds, offering an intimate setting where competitors can feel the support from spectators as they circle through. Registration opens at 9:00am on race day, giving participants ample time to collect their numbers and bike rack slots. A mandatory briefing will commence at 9:45am for all entrants, followed by a prompt start of the triathlon at 10:00am sharp. The event is open to individuals aged 15 or older as of December 31st, with parental consent required for competitors between ages 15 and 17. Entry fees are £15 for members of Shetland Triathlon Club and £20 for non-members for individual entries. Team entry costs rise slightly to £20 for club members and £25 for non-club participants. Participants not affiliated with one of the Home Nations Triathlon Federations must purchase a race pass. All bicycles used in the event must be roadworthy, and helmets are mandatory.
