Stromness Open Water Triathlon Festival 2026

On Sunday, August 30th, 2026, the scenic town of Stromness will host the annual Stromness Open Water Triathlon Festival. This picturesque race offers both sprint and standard distance options for triathletes looking to challenge themselves against a stunning Orkney backdrop.
The event headquarters is located in the Warehouse Buildings off Ferry Road, just a two-minute walk from the Northlink Ferry Terminal. Ample parking can be found approximately 400 meters down Ferry Road. Race day registration begins at 8:00 AM in the Warehouse Buildings before participants head to the Marina slipway for their deep water start.
The sprint race features a single lap of a 750-meter open-water swim, followed by one loop on an exhilarating 23-kilometer bike course that winds through historical sites. Competitors then transition and hit the run with two laps around Stromness's narrow, picturesque streets for a total distance of five kilometers.
For those seeking more of a challenge, the standard race doubles down on all aspects: swimmers complete a full 1500-meter swim over two loops; cyclists tackle the same fast bike course twice to cover 43 kilometers in total; and runners face four laps around Stromness for an overall run distance of ten kilometers.
The transition area is set up right next to the Marina-side car park, offering quick access from water to bikes. After T2, athletes will take off on a beautiful 2.5-kilometer looped course that showcases the charm and character of Stromness's historic streets before finishing near where they started at the swim exit.
Team entries are welcomed, adding an extra layer of camaraderie and support for participants. The minimum age requirements remain consistent with previous years: competitors must be at least 15 to participate in the sprint race and 17 for the standard distance event.
Registration opens on August 30th from 8:00 AM onwards, followed by a pre-race briefing starting at 9:45 AM. The races begin promptly at 10:00 AM with swimmers diving off the Marina slipway into open waters.
