Celebrate the South Shields 10 Mile Race as it marks its momentous tenth anniversary along the picturesque coastline of South Shields. This beloved fixture on the North East running calendar offers runners an unforgettable journey through stunning coastal scenery, making it a perfect fitness marker ahead of September’s Great North Run. The race is renowned for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, inviting participants from all levels — whether you're a seasoned athlete or taking part in your first 10-mile event. The dedicated team behind the South Shields Running Club ensures every runner feels supported throughout their journey. Race Day kicks off at Souter Lighthouse with car parking and registration starting at 7:30am, followed by a safety briefing just before the race begins at 9:00am. Runners will embark on an out-and-back course that winds along The Leas and the dramatic coastline, offering breathtaking views of Marsden Rock, Frenchman's Bay, Sandhaven Beach, and perhaps even glimpses of playful dolphins. All finishers are rewarded with a special edition medal commemorating this milestone year; however, to ensure you receive your prize on race day, make sure to register by July 22nd. Medals will be mailed out after the event for those who miss that deadline. The top three male and female runners also earn awards in recognition of their outstanding performance. The route features a mix of surfaces along the scenic coastlines managed by the National Trust. While this terrain is open to park users, participants are reminded to respect others enjoying the area. Light trail shoes are recommended for wet conditions while road running shoes work well on dry days. Refreshments and cheering crowds enliven the course as runners pass through key landmarks like Marsden Grotto. Water stations along with feed points provide necessary hydration throughout the race, encouraging all participants to aim for a finish by 11:45am but allowing flexibility within a completion window until then. Race HQ is located at Whitburn Coastal Community Centre near Souter Lighthouse, and parking details are available online or on-site north of the lighthouse with charges applicable. To reduce plastic waste, bring your own water bottle if possible; paper cups will be provided where needed. Join us for this special celebration that blends athletic challenge with community spirit in one of England’s most beautiful coastal settings.
