The Highlander, Backyard Ultra, Scottish Championship 2026
About the Event
Set against the majestic backdrop of Murthly Castle Estate in Perthshire, The Highlander Backyard Ultra is an endurance test like no other. This unique race unfolds over 4.167 miles per loop and challenges runners to complete each lap within a strict one-hour time limit. Starting at noon, competitors must be ready to begin the next hour-long circuit precisely on the hour until only one runner remains. The Highlander Backyard Ultra is not just about speed; it's about strategy and mental fortitude. Each loop begins with all participants on equal footing, requiring runners to carefully pace themselves throughout the day. The race continues hourly until a single competitor stands at the starting line, ready for their final solo lap within the time frame to claim victory. The course, while not entirely flat, can be navigated comfortably within an hour if managed correctly. However, missing even one loop's deadline results in disqualification. Runners who last 24 hours earn a special Rocket Events 100-mile medal, regardless of their final standing. Competitors are provided with a gazebo or shelter at the start/finish area as part of their entry fee for essential aid and rest between loops. A comprehensive race information pack is sent out in early July to prepare participants for registration details, camping options, first-aid facilities, and toilet arrangements. For those unable to participate after signing up, refunds are available under specific conditions: a £15 administration charge applies if withdrawn within 30 days of entry; a 50% refund is offered between 30 days and 12 weeks before the event; and no refunds are given less than 12 weeks out. Transfers or deferrals to other runners are not permitted. This challenging yet rewarding race invites participants to experience the beauty of Perthshire while pushing their limits in a unique, competitive environment.

About Highland
Learn more about the host city, Highland.
Highlands or uplands are areas of high elevation such as a mountainous region, elevated mountainous plateau or high hills. Generally, upland refers to a range of hills, typically from 300 m (980 ft) up to 600 m (2,000 ft), while highland is usually reserved for ranges of low mountains. However, the two terms are interchangeable and also include regions that are transitional between hilly and mountainous terrain.
