The Backwoods Beast is an unapologetically rugged endurance challenge designed for those who thrive on pushing their boundaries. This fundraiser for Pictou County United Way continues the legacy of "Backyard Boogeyman," now reimagined as The Mangy Coyote, honoring our 2025 mascots with a new name and spirit. This event is not about glory or medals; it's an endurance test that gauges your resolve to face discomfort. For 13 hours, you'll run a loop, then repeat—endlessly until the clock stops or you call quits. The focus is on survival, stubbornness, and attitude. The race will take place in Trenton Park, Nova Scotia, from dawn till dusk. It's a casual backyard-style ultramarathon with no refunds offered. Start your journey at 9:00 am, aiming to complete the loops until midnight or beyond. Aid stations offer basic hydration and snacks—just enough to keep you honest. Expect a terrain that mixes groomed double-wide gravel trails with technical singletrack. The loop distance is yet to be confirmed but estimated between 4-6 kilometers with an elevation gain of around 40-60 meters. Divisions are set for most loops completed, with both male and female categories vying for the trophy and prize package. A special award, the Spirit of the Pack, will recognize a runner who embodies grit and community spirit. The atmosphere is one of camaraderie and chaos: think firelight, laughter, fatigue, and that wild pulse that rekindles your passion for running. Whether you bow out after a few loops or push until the end, you'll earn your place in the pack. Registration costs $85 plus tax and processing fees, including a finisher sticker, access to full-stocked aid stations, and a picture of runners swapping stories under string lights as a crowd cheers them on. The Mangy Coyote is about grit and the unique joy of doing something slightly unhinged with friends—it's fun, tough, and undeniably human. Join us for an experience that pushes your limits and celebrates the wild spirit within. Test yourself; see how long you can stay in this unapologetically backwoods challenge.
