Honor the Heroes of Slovakia's National Uprising – Guardians of Tatra Valleys Mountain Race
The Beh hrdinov Slovenského národného povstania (Heroes' Run) is an exceptional mountain sporting event that intertwines sport, history, and remembrance in the Vysoké Tatry mountains. This race commemorates those who demonstrated bravery during Slovakia's most challenging times by aiding and protecting both the High Tatras and Spiš regions.
Organized annually since its inception, this year’s edition will take place on August 29, 2026, starting at 8:20 AM in Tatranská Lomnica. The race covers a distance of 11.8 kilometers with an elevation gain of 900 meters and is expected to last approximately three hours and thirty minutes.
The course begins from the heart of Tatranská Lomnica, passing through Starolesnianske Poľana (Rainerova chata), Zamkové Chata, and ends in Skalnaté Pleso. Along this scenic route, runners will traverse cold valleys that served as strategic hideouts during World War II for partisans and those fleeing occupation.
The race pays tribute to historical figures like Štefan Zamkovský, the caretaker of Zamkové Chata who provided refuge and supplies to resistance fighters and persecuted individuals. The symbolic endpoint in Skalnatá Dolina highlights the importance of local ski lifts and mountain infrastructure during wartime operations.
Participants will experience breathtaking views of the High Tatras while running through significant historical sites linked with Slovakia's National Uprising. Each step retraces a path filled with bravery, freedom, and resistance against tyranny.
Registration for this event can be completed online until August 9th at https://my.raceresult.com/411345/registration or in person on the day of the race from 6:00 to 7:45 AM at Tatranská Lomnica Park. Results will be announced at 2 PM within the historical park center during the Festival of High Mountains.
The event is limited to a maximum of 250 participants, ensuring an intimate and focused experience for all runners. Each participant must secure their own insurance coverage suitable for mountain terrain as this race takes place on rugged trails in high altitudes.
In addition to the exhilarating run itself, entrants will enjoy complimentary access to the ski lift from Skalnaté Pleso back down to Tatranská Lomnica via a scenic cable car ride. Personal items can be transported using these lifts but are subject to weight restrictions of 3 kg per person.
This race not only celebrates athletic prowess but also serves as an homage to those who stood firm against oppression, dedicating their lives and efforts towards freedom and justice during tumultuous times.
