About the Event

On Sunday, September 13th, 2026, Cani-sports Scotland invites you to the tenth anniversary of The Black Dog 5k Race held at Pettycur Sands in Kinghorn. This unique beach race is dedicated to Becky Johnson and offers a memorable experience for both runners and their canine companions.
The event kicks off at 11am when the tide recedes farthest, allowing participants to navigate around the famous Black Rock on Pettycur Bay's expansive sand. The course spans just under five kilometers (2.68 miles), offering an out-and-back route that challenges even seasoned racers with its varied terrain and seaside atmosphere.
Participants must collect their race numbers from 10am onwards at Pettycur Sands, ensuring they are ready to line up for the mass start promptly at 11am. The event is strictly by pre-registration; no on-the-day entries will be accepted due to limited capacity of 100 runners and parking constraints.
The course features a mix of sandy stretches and rocky outcrops leading around Black Rock, where participants are likely to get their feet wet as they navigate the tide. This race celebrates not only speed but also teamwork between humans and dogs, with categories for single dog teams and two-dog pairs across various age groups including juniors (11-14) and kids (7-10), who must be accompanied by an adult.
Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category—male and female runners as well as male and female dog teams. The Rebecca Johnston Memorial Trophy goes to the fastest runner on the beach, while junior participants receive their own commemorative trophies for their achievements.
Entry fees are £22 per participant with registrations closing at midday on Monday, September 7th or once full capacity is reached. Early registration opens Friday, August 14th at 8pm.
Cani-sports Scotland emphasizes the importance of dog safety and health throughout the race day. Dogs must be a minimum of one year old to compete and should not exhibit aggressive behavior towards other animals during the event. Handlers are encouraged to use harnesses for their dogs' comfort, with equipment available on-site if needed.
Parking is limited near Pettycur Sands; participants can park at public lots or along streets in Kinghorn but must respect local residents’ driveways. Public toilets are located near the lifeboat station opposite Kinghorn Beach and by the harbor entrance.
For those looking to enjoy a meal before or after their race, "Carousel" café offers excellent food options just up Pettycur Road from the beach. A chip shop is also available in nearby Burntisland for post-race treats.
Remember that camping isn't allowed at the start location; however, local campgrounds provide alternative accommodation choices near Pettycur Bay.
Race participants are reminded to adhere strictly to all rules and safety guidelines provided by Cani-sports Scotland. The event promises a day filled with camaraderie, scenic beauty, and unforgettable moments for both runners and their four-legged friends.

About Burntisland

Learn more about the host city, Burntisland.

Scenic view of

Burntisland is a port on the north coast of the Firth of Forth, in Fife in central Scotland, with a population of 6600 in 2020. Its west side is industrial and formerly had ship-building, but its east (downriver) is a small seaside resort and commuter town for Edinburgh. Its name refers to an island in the harbour that was long ago engulfed by shoreline development. The usual story is that huts there caught fire, but it could derive from "Burnet's land" a bygone landowner.
