NAV4: LiAD Recce - Caldbeck to Threlkeld

Experience one of the most challenging and scenic sections of Lake District's NAV4 Lakes in A Day (LiAD) race with this exclusive recce day. Organized by Joe Faulkner and his seasoned team at NAV4 Adventure, participants will have a unique opportunity to familiarize themselves with the route from Caldbeck to Threlkeld under expert guidance.
The journey begins near the charming village of Caldbeck and ventures into some of Cumbria's most rugged terrain. The day includes crossing the River Caldew via fording—a crucial skill for anyone attempting LiAD—and scaling Blencathra, one of the Lake District’s iconic peaks. After conquering this ascent, runners will face a thrilling descent down Hallsfell Ridge.
The 12-mile route encompasses varied landscapes: initial stretches along lanes and trails transition into remote open fell land with small grassy trods and rocky sections that test both navigation skills and physical endurance. The terrain is rough and challenging, demanding slow progress over steep ascents and descents totaling an impressive 3600 feet.
Participants will receive invaluable advice on everything from appropriate clothing choices to effective hydration strategies during the day's instruction sessions led by experienced NAV4 tutors who have extensive experience with LiAD. Topics covered include navigation tips, route planning, nutrition for long-distance running, and training methods tailored specifically for this event’s unique challenges.
Transport is provided at 8:15 am from Threlkeld to Caldbeck before the recce starts around 9 am sharp. Detailed meeting points will be communicated via a 'Final Info' email sent out one week prior to the day itself.
